Unit 5 Graphic Design Movements

In this unit we are required to research different Graphic Design movements throughout history. After we have carried this research we need to create our own poster about a graphic design movements and its designer.

Pictorial Modernism:

Pictorial Modernism first began in the early 19th century. As many different aspects of the western culture started to change in society at this time. The world was becoming more and more modern and many new inventions and industries were coming out. Because of all these changes in the world it was very important for graphic designers and artists to rethink the general design of a products branding. This meant giving designs a much more modern and new look. This was important for these new industries, by making the packaging look modern and eye grabbing. If the packaging for these new items was old nothing to special no one would be as interested in buying it and the product might not be as successful.

Bauhaus:

In 1919 a German design school was opened and named Bauhaus. This school was opened by Walter Gropius, an architect who taught; industrial design, graphic design, photography, architecture, new media and fine art. This school was well known for asking students how ‘modernisation could be mastered by means of graphic design’. The school also taught that cleans and balanced visuals are important for graphic design.

Corporate Identity And Visual Systems

During the second world war thousands of new technologies were coming out. The amount of new inventions also grows rapidly during major wars because armies are under huge pressure to create a big to get one up on the enemy. By the end of the second war thousands of inventions had been created for the war but still has many particle uses. When the war had ended more and more focus went on consumer based goods. Many ceo’s also began to realise that “Good design is good business” They learnt that the simpler the logo the easier it is to read and remember which will make people more likely to buy a product.

Timeline of IBM logo’s. Notice how they get more simple around the 1950s.

After doing this research in different graphic design movements I have found out that I am most interested in the Bauhaus movement. I think that Bauhaus was defiantly one of the most influential art schools from the 20th century. The original idea behind Bauhaus was to create an art school which shows its students the soullessness manufacturing and products. They wanted to teach students how to put soul and effort into the branding of a product. There overall aim was to change the way that products are branded. By making the packaging & posters eye catching, colourful and interesting.

Several examples of the many different revolutionary designs which came out of the Bauhaus college. Many of which are still used in graphic design today.

Here is my own Bauhaus inspired poster:

Below is a presentation that I have created to show the process in making this poster.
